I have used second life and other online communities for awhile now and here are a few things that I find interesting in the area of self identity and things that just aren’t in the category of self identity.

Second life

Although these aren’t my avatars, I came across them on second life and thought it was interesting to see how creative people can be in creating an avatar not based on their own self identity but rather on their alter ego and creative minds.

Whilst I was on second life I thought I would show how good its self identity features can be for someone that is basing their avatar on themselves. Here you can see how you can customize your avatars height, torso, eyes and what type of clothing you can wear, which in my opinion is a really good feature for people creating avatars based on themselves and based on their alter egos.

Whilst strolling around town I came across three girls (that were just chatting away) and thought how unique their avatars looked i.e. their skin colour, clothing and hair colour. Also I noticed how well designed the town was, from the music store where you can actually listen to the latest songs and the supermarket (at the back on the right) were you can buy clothes, shoes, posters and other fun and funny looking objects.

Here I came across a private party (which somehow I got invited to) which was pretty fun, different aged people talking about things that everyone could join in on i.e. the latest movies which they have seen.

While I am at it I might as well show my current avatar, nothing special really just based my avatar on what kind of clothing I like, the hair style that I thought looked pretty cool and the beard... well that’s just a little added feature.

I don’t get the whole flying thing though; it is a strange feature to have on a community website. Although I guess it beats walking everywhere.

I found this interesting on a person’s profile; basically it’s what they look like in real life and also their avatar in second life. In my opinion this is a really good example of how you can show yourself identity onto an avatar.

This is a really good feature in second life, which is to watch movies on anything that is being shown in the cinema theatre. I find this a good feature because it will keep second life users occuoied and will prevent them from getting bored.
